COVID-19 Stone Soup Relief for LEIMAY
WHO?
LEIMAY is an artist-run organization and artistic ensemble based in Brooklyn, NY.
Over the past 24 years, LEIMAY has created a plethora of programs that support artistic exploration, resource sharing, community development, collaboration, and professional development. We nurture a self-sustaining community of artists and audiences and our interconnected programs make up the fabric of the ecosystem that we sustain at our home and work-space, CAVE.
WHY?
LEIMAY’s priority is the health and well-being of our audiences, students, fellows, Ensemble, employees, and collaborators, and our city at-large. LEIMAY on-site programs are now canceled until the end of May 2020 or until this pandemic is contained.
Being an artist-run and artist-centered organization, COVID-19 / coronavirus in NYC faces us with a major economic uncertainty. Our immediate community is being impacted by social-isolation, loss of jobs, and financial instability. Just between last night and this morning, our full ensemble lost their day jobs.
A head-count of twenty, including our ensemble, staff-members, and fellows, are freelancers working in the service industry, childcare, education, and theatrical production and theatrical design work. Our interdependence makes this a very fragile moment for our ecology and capacity to continue to share resources, hold space, and share our work with the world.
OUR HOPE:
To collect donations and build a fund which will serve as a net of support by ensuring needs-based resources, including 1) a minimum monthly relief stipend of $200 to our ensemble and admin team through June, 2) freeze our fellowships for at least one month (which we have already done), or, depending on the funds raised, up to three months, and 3) securing space for the artists who work and develop their craft at CAVE, so when their return is possible, they can land with their resources in place to continue their regular practice.
WHAT IS STONE SOUP?
Stone Soup is a folk story in which hungry strangers share a small amount of their food in order to make a meal - then, everybody gets to eat.
